Welcome to the Wellington Women's Boarding House

The Wellington Women's Boarding House provides safe, pleasant accommodation for women on low incomes. With a live in manager, the big old house in Mt Victoria offers comfort, companionship, protection and independence at the same time.

This is the only house of its kind in the country. It offers a sanctuary where women can "get their life back together". The circumstances that bring women to the house are varied, but in all cases, the women need a safe, supportive environment, at an affordable cost - and that is what the house aims to provide.

Since the House opened in mid 1992, it has almost always been full. Residents have been aged from 17 through to 84, with an average stay of eight months. Occasionally, some return for a second period of residency. An emergency room is available for women with no money and nowhere to go.

The house offers its residents a sense of home: they each have their own single room, and access to the communal areas of the lounge, kitchen, laundry, and garden. Women provide their own food, and do their own cooking and laundry.

The house is largely a voluntary effort. All of the Management Committee are volunteers, with each putting in 6 to 20 hours per month on management issues, accounting, consultation, and other duties. The Committee meet on a monthly basis to review operations of the house.

The house is always in need of new volunteers. If you have a desire to assist running a house helping women in-need, then please contact the Chairperson of the Management Committee (see below for contact details).
